“Brief aan de Paus” will air on Tuesday March 3 on CANVAS. The timing is notable, as “The Group of 15” will meet Minister Verlinden together with Mgr. Terlinden the following day, March 4.
Following the impact of the 2023 series Godvergeten, the film takes stock of what has happened since. It asks whether the promises made by Church, politics, and justice have led to real change, while again giving survivors a central voice.
A strong element is its multilingual approach, which makes clear that abuse and institutional failure crossed language borders, something the earlier broadcasts of “Godvergeten” did not fully show.
Some of our BASTA! friends attended a pre-screening of the documentary “Brief aan de Paus” earlier this month and it was a very profound experience. The screening seemed to spark renewed energy and determination. Being a bit of a call to arms, it helped forge a new coalition of victims.
Among those of us in the group of 15, who were closely involved and met the Pope twice, the feeling of gratitude towards the documentary makers is especially strong. The documentary perfectly illustrates our frustration with dealing with the Church.
We hope the documentary will serve as a call to action not only for victims, but also for the wider public, so that meaningful government measures for victims can finally be put in place.
